I recently heard about BIID and Amputee Identity Disorder. Is this a real medical condition? Why do people desire to be disabled or amputees? I am trying to understand without judging.

It is characterized by an intense, persistent desire to acquire a physical disability (such as amputation, paraplegia, or blindness) in order to align one's physical body with their internal identity. It is structurally similar to gender dysphoria. People with BID do not desire the disability for secondary gain (like attention or financial reasons); it is a profound identity mismatch.
