Where to find a specialist

5/23/2026, 2:39:26 PM

Hello, ever since I made my BIID confession with my parents seven months ago, things have been precarious, and I want to pursue therapy so I can get as close to an official diagnosis as possible. I live in America and it can’t really be officially diagnosed here. Is there anyway to contact Dr. First or anyone who specializes in BIID? Would I have better luck finding an online therapist? I could really use some help here.

For Dr. First, just Google Dr. First BIID and you can get his contact information in Columbia University. You can also give them this article from the German group: https://www.reddit.com/r/biid/comments/146uzn6/information_for_relatives_what_is_bid/

After I contact him, would a consultation be set up? Would it cost money? I’ve never done anything like this before.

He has a way of setting up appointments on his site. I am not sure if he will take insurance, and it might be costly, but I do not know. I had only written to him about things in the past, and he did reply. There are not many other places that you can get a diagnosis, since there are not that many in the medical community who understand BID. Here is the official diagnosis in the ICD-11 written by Dr. First, https://icd.who.int/browse/2025-01/mms/en#256572629
