What is Body Integrity Dysphoria (BID)?
Body Integrity Dysphoria (BID) — historically known as Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), Amputee Identity Disorder, or Foreign Limb Syndrome — is a recognized neurological and psychological condition (ICD-11 6C21).
Is this a delusion or a fetish?
No. BID is characterized by an intense, persistent desire to acquire a physical disability (such as amputation, paraplegia, or blindness) in order to align one's physical body with their internal identity. It is not driven by sexual arousal, nor is it a delusion. People with BID are entirely aware of their reality; they simply experience a profound mismatch between their physical body map and their internal identity.
How does it present?
While the desire for amputation is the most discussed presentation, BID encompasses a full spectrum of identities, including the desire for paralysis (wheelchair identity disorder), blindness, deafness, and other forms of physical impairment.
Am I the only one?
You are absolutely not alone. Many people discover this term late in life after spending decades thinking they were the only person in the world who felt this way. This community exists to break that isolation.
